    Payless ShoeSource is seeking a world-class HR leader with a passion for establishing and developing exceptional HR practices to partner with our innovative and energetic leadership team in Dallas.


    Our ideal candidate is a self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity and can thrive in a fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Head of Human Resources, this role is responsible for providing outstanding business partnership, support and counsel to our leadership team and employee base in Dallas.  This position has a HR Specialist role reporting into it which is located in the satellite office in Topeka, KS.


    • Own and manage the HR relationship with the Dallas leadership group, providing strategic counsel and advice to leaders across the business.
    • Manage the HR Specialist in Topeka, providing guidance, coaching and oversight for day-to-day HR operations.
    • Partner daily with executive leaders in the support of organization diagnostics, structure, org capabilities and change management to ensure organizational effectiveness.
    • Support talent acquisition and development. Create and facilitate internal offers and moves across business functions, develop bench strength plans, and consult on talent moves and retention plans.
    • Implement HR processes to build individual and team capabilities, ranging from performance management/merit, incentive plans, individual development plans, and succession planning.
    • Drive a strong focus on employee relations, performance management, engagement and retention activities
    • Ensure fair, consistent, and effective application of HR polices/procedures. Consult with managers/associates regarding day-to-day associate relations and performance.
    • Respond to associates' concerns, investigate and resolve claims of harassment, discrimination, and other associate complaints.


    • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters or MBA preferred
    • Extensive experience in HR (ideally at a retail company)
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - including the ability to communicate with people in multiple locations in a high-touch personalized manner
    • The ability to understand business goals and recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in business objectives, productivity and development of commercial HR within the company
    • A true hands-on approach as well as the ability to successfully monitor the "pulse" of the employee and corporate group to ensure a high level of employee engagement
    • Proven knowledge and practical application of US HR practices and employment laws
    • Experience with rapid and complex changing work environment
    • Coaching and mentoring experience at management level
    • Success in creating and driving effective development, employee relations, retention and reward programs
    • Will be an enthusiastic team player with a strong drive to create a positive work environment
    • Will be comfortable with high volume workload and not be afraid to "roll up your sleeves"
    • Will have a strong solutions focus and be comfortable working in an environment which demands intensive delivery.
    • Impeccable integrity and able to objectively interpret policies and rules considering applicable legal implications and applying logic to each situation operating effectively in the “gray” area.
